The international context of UK radicalisation trends: developments abroad that inspire terrorism within the UK
This paper situates the jihadi threat to the UK within the overall threat to Western Europe, emphasising its transnational dimension and historical continuity. It is based primarily on an in-depth study of patterns in jihadi terrorist plotting in the region since the mid-1990s (Nesser, 2018) and an article from 2016 analysing how the rise of Islamic State (IS) has affected the attack activity in European countries (Nesser, Stenersen and Oftedal, 2016). The author argues that three main factors shape the UK threat level: military interventions in Muslim countries, transnational network dynamics and jihadi network entrepreneurs.
