Comparison of experiences and best practice in CVE drawn from research in other countries: Countering Violent Extremism in the United States
While significantly more aggressive overseas, domestically the United States’ efforts in the field of CVE have been timid, underfunded and haphazard. The reluctance to engage in activities that go beyond mere community engagement is caused by a combination of overlapping factors, which include the belief that radicalisation is a marginal problem within the American Muslim community that can be contained through traditional law enforcement tactics; bureaucratic infightings; and a widespread aversion to meddling with ideological and religious issues. During the last years of the Obama administration a handful of more substantial programs were put in place, particularly at the local level. With the advent of the Trump administration, which has not expressed a fully formed position on CVE but has given signs on diffidence towards it, it remains to be seen whether domestic CVE will have a future and, if so, what form it will take.
