Professor Tahir Abbas PhD FRSA is currently Visiting Senior Fellow at the Department of Government at the London School of Economics. From 2016-2017, he was a Senior Research Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute, working on countering violent extremism research and policy development. From 2010-2016, he was a Professor of Sociology at Fatih University in Istanbul, where he wrote Contemporary Turkey in Conflict (Edinburgh University Press, 2016). During his time in Istanbul, he was a visiting professor at New York University, Leiden University, Hebrew University in Jerusalem, International Islamic University in Islamabad and the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University in Jakarta. His recent books include the four-volume edited Muslim Diasporas in the West (Routledge, 2017) and the co-edited Political Muslims (Syracuse University Press, 2018, with S Hamid). To date, Abbas has published 16 volumes, and over 70 peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters and encyclopaedia articles on the subjects of ethnicity, identity, politics and radicalisation. His forthcoming books are Beyond Islamophobia, Radicalisation and the Culture of Violence (Hurst/Oxford University Press, 2018) and the co-authored Countering Violent Extremism (IB Tauris, 2019, with M Elshimi).
