Ian Maxwell is a dual British-French national. He is a former Trustee of The People’s Trust, an Anglo-Greek charitable entity providing micro-funding to new and existing businesses in Greece, an enterprise inspired by the work of HRH The Prince of Wales’ Prince’s Trust to whose Youth Business Initiative Mr Maxwell was seconded for a year in the mid-1980s.
Mr Maxwell’s early career (1978-1991) was in the family publishing and media business (where he was Joint Managing Director of Maxwell Communications Corporation plc and a Director and subsequently Chairman and Publisher of Mirror Group Newspapers plc both of which companies owned substantial assets in the USA (including Macmillan, OAG and the New York Daily News) and internationally including MTV Europe and Pergamon Press). He was also a Director of France’s national TV station, TF1 and Managing Director of The European newspaper. Following the collapse of the family business on the death of his father, Mr Maxwell has worked in a variety of industries as an entrepreneurial investor and operator including publishing, telecoms and commercial real estate, where he is currently active in the purpose built student accommodation (PBSA) sector in the UK and in Europe.
